Colorado Auto Outlook reports that electric vehicle sales took off last year in the state.

Dear Commissioners:

I would like to respectfully ask that you vote to adopt a Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standard for Colorado at the rulemaking hearing beginning November 14th of this year. I also understand that the AQCC will be undertaking a separate rulemaking process to adopt a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) standard and would also ask that you adopt a ZEV rule as well in early 2019.

Advancements in fuel efficiency—spurred by clean car standards—are designed to save Americans money. Current clean car standards can save consumers as much as $5,700 per car and $8,200 per truck over the lifetime of their vehicle. Prior to the Trump Administration’s rollback of federal clean car standards, drivers have saved more than $50 billion and counting. Rolling back the standards breaks a promise to the American people, making these savings vanish into thin air.

It is time for Colorado to act despite what is happening in Washington. By adopting both LEV and ZEV standards, Coloradans will save money, breathe easier and we will further our action to reduce the emission of harmful greenhouse gases. Let’s pave the way for more of these vehicles to come to Colorado.

Electric vehicles provide huge reductions in emissions, including a 99% reduction in volatile organic compounds, compared to a gasoline car. Denver and the North Front Range are too often in violation of federal air quality standards for ozone, and more EVs will help with the Governor’s goal of having the cleanest air in the country.

Colorado needs clean car standards. Colorado needs both LEV and ZEV standards. These efforts will save consumers money and clean our air – all helping to make Colorado’s road to the nation’s cleanest air a shorter ride.
